Brief Bio

Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Strawhat Pirates. He is commonly referred to as“Strawhat”. He began his journey as a pirate to find the hidden treasure of Gol D. Roger, the greatest pirate to ever live. Luffy has one brother (by adoption, not blood) named Ace, who passed away during the battle of chapter 574 which is in the Marineford arc. Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger, and presumably, his death ended the Gol D. Family line. Luffy also treats all of his crewmates as a family, calling them “nakamas” which directly translates to “closer than family”. His grandfather Monkey D. Garp is a general of the marines and is Luffy's enemy for most of the series, but he becomes an ally in times of need. Luffy's father is Monkey D. Dragon, a revolutionary that started a war against the Marines.

Devil Fruit Ability

Luffy has the Gum Gum fruit ability aka the GomuGomu fruit. The Gum Gum fruit allows him to stretch his body which allows him many interesting options for combat and mobility, he has many abilities so we will only focus on the most important ones. One of the many Gum Gum abilities and the first that we see is the “Gomu-Gomu Pistol”, where Luffy stretches his arms out in a punch, making it powerful enough to destroy rocks. Another move that Luffy uses, although one that he invents later on in the story, is the “Gear” abilities, he can go to gear 1, gear 2 and even gear 3, with each level having growing power, yet also growing backlash once the power-up is over. The gear abilities allow Luffy to temporarily buff his power as to make him stronger in combat, they also increase his speed and visual prowess (the last of these is implied, but not specifically stated). He is a master of Haki, which means he can use all three types of Haki. This makes him terrifying to have as an enemy, as he can see for miles, make his skin as strong as metal, and he even has the extremely rare Conquerors Haki, which is achieved by pure will power. It allows the user to emit a powerful aura that can take out enemies without Luffy even having to move. He once used this ability to take down 50,00 fishmen alone in seconds. Other users of this type of Haki are all either top-level pirate captains or extremely tough members of the Navy.
